The kit is 260$ without the tank...I can buy all the parts mentioned for $250 WITH the tank if I do it on my own.
does all this sound right?

arc to tig conversion Sawsall? |
Lead | |
|
I am wanting to convert my arc welder to tig...I have a 250A ac/dc reversible supply. From what I can tell all I need to do is get an argon/co2 tank, flexhead torch with reg., flow reg. for the tank, and the dinse to attach the tig torch to my rig and then run it all as DCv....does this sound right or do I really need to buy a conversion kit like whats on tigdepot.com? yes I know I wont have a foot pedal...dont care.

check out harbore freight , they have a tig conversion that uses a standard arc welder (old style stick welder) and it comes with everything but the bottle and regulator , it usualy sells for like $50.00 if i remember right . just my 2 cents hope it helps .

I think the $50 one is just the gun and hose, no reg or tank. Their Argon tanks go for $60 by themselves. I've been thinking of the same thing for my Lincoln 230/230, and I know Sawsall did it before he lucked into a HF setup.

in my own opion how are you going to control the heat witout a foot pedal? When useing TIG you control the heat by the foot pedal. It is not like mig where you can just set the heat and weld to do it right you need full control of the heat at all times.

Oddly enough, I couldn't find the TIG torch setup at HFT either- I guess they pulled it. Sucks, cuz I wanted to do that too.
As far as heat- I suppose you have to guess, and try a short run before raising or lowering, and hope you didn't do much damage. Nick "Now I see it's a comfort to you, Hammer my bones on the anvil of daylight." |

thats what they make the welders slide rule for...shows you what amperage, filler, etc. for whatever type of metal...all the basics to get it pretty close to right without the foot control.
other than that though...does this all seem correct? want to order the parts asap if im right. |

the only problem with the slide rule that is for perfect metal .it was designed in a lab with new metal no paint no rust no oil just perfect. the real world is totaly different I think you would be happier with the foot pedal to control heat.
but that sounds like everything you would need its not that diffuclt of a setup. |

I would be alot happier with a pedal, but im looking at $250 as opposed to $1600...cant swing that anytime soon.

Some have a small thumb wheel set up on the torch body - not as convenient as a foot pedal but once you get used to it it works well

You will not be able to use a remote (foot pedal or thumb wheel) because the welder is not set up fot it...
You have to use the judgement & practice to determine heat & set it on the machine... General rule I used was the thickness of metal was the amperage I used... then adjust from there... while welding if you burning through move faster or stop & turn down the heat... not hot enough, move slower or crank up the heat... You don't need high frequency unless your going to weld aluminum... you will have to scratch start.... You can find tig torches on ebay... But you can get as good of deals at you local welding supply... sometimes they will have used stuff... Tell them what you want to do... They will have the tank, argon power cable, torch, tungsten etc I leased my tanks... |
