also, i may be mistaken on my info/backround, and this is WIDE OPEN to additions & corrections, so here we go.
popular gas tank styles & pics of what i think are typical examples:
coffin tank
pretty much explained by the shape
fat bob tank(s)
stock on many harleys ,two piece, aftermarket tanks may come narrowed, stretched, with or without dash, lotsa variations
quickbob tank
i believe these are all aftermarket, same basic style, one piece
sportster (sporty) tank
an original HD style, many variations, sizes, mounting techniques, lotsa aftermarket tanks copy these
frisco (or frisco'd) tank
not so much a tank shape (tho typically done w/ sporty tanks) as a mounting style, high up on the back bone
peanut tank
i think these get confused with sportys alot, but it's a different shape than a stock sporty
prism tank
now here's a gray area to me. a coffin style tank, not really shaped like a coffin. am i correct here? jump in
mustang tank single cap
mustang tank duel cap
these are sometimes confused with fatbob tanks to those new to the chopper scene, and from, or patterned after, the original tanks from the Mustang motorcycle(or motorbike) a small bike from 45 +/- years ago, kind of a bigger whizzer.
added:
diamond tank
diamond tank 2
these aren't perfect examples, some are more true to the diamond shape, i.e., no flat panel on top, & pointed at front & back ends. (#2 is mine, for my rigid 750 chop!)
hawler tank
i have no friggin' idea where this gets it's name from, & i've only seen a couple in my long hazy existence.
please feel free to make additions or corrections.
i hope this is useful.
thanks for your patience,
bd
