Since I've had the bike, the rear brake has always been soft and I've never been able to lock it up.......just thought it was normal.
also, it started to stick on shen I did stop......thought the shoes were worn.
this past weekend, ron and I decided to tackle it and see what the deal was. It turned out that the brake stay was in the wrong place. The bar that was on
it was too short for the longer Triton swingarm.........that caused the attachment point on the drum to be 3" forward from center.
we made a longer stay bar that brought the attachment point almost directly under the axle.
that did the trick........I'm amazed I was riding around like that. It is like night and day.
so any of you guys with longer swing arms, check out your geometry, and mounting......you might be surprised.

my tappets didn't come apart on my bike while riding back from Nate's last year....where we spent 3 hours on the side of the road taking apart your
valve cover to retreive the tappet nut..? oooh that was fun.

Excellent point about the drum brakes having to be positioned correctly!!! Foward motion assisted deal!!!
A lot of guys are not familiar with drum brakes these days. I wish I wasn't. Leading shoe kinda shit, dual wheel cylinders etc. I have 2 '50's Chryslers with all 4 wheels with drums. The '55 has one year only setup that borrows from the drum technology s from the 30's-50's with a screwed up M/C. The '57 is a much better setup that Chrysler used well into the late 60's - maybe the '70's. Improved "planer" tech and adjustability. Here is a tip. I had to fine tune the linings. I had a Houston re-manufacturer brake lining shop reline the shoes 2 sizes over and then I brought the linings and drums to another shop "on the fringes". Abestos, city ordinances and OSHA rules deal. The "anything is legal unless you get caught" shop 1st re-ground(turned) the drums. Then, using one of that last purpose-built machines around, they ground the linings to fit the drums. Popular thing to do up until the mid '70s when almost all cars had front wheel discs. Having the linings match the drums ensures that you have a full contact patch. Much better stopping power with less touchiness and grabbing.

Hey 71CHOP could you post a pic of what it looks like now after you fixed it. I think that may be my problem to and I want to see what yours looks like. Mine
started sticking after I lowered the rear with struts. I lowered it about 4" from stock, stock swing arm is still in there also.

dtm, my '78's brake stay mountinng nub is at between the 4-5 o'clock position from the ground. Brake actuator lever hole is between the 7 and 8
oclock area. The lower of the 2 dimples on the top rite side of the plate just about lines up with the bottom shock mount.
Take a look at an ebay stocker pic to get an idea.
